This has been a busy week. The report of the 14th Finance Commission has been made public. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has presented a budget that tries to transcend the usual myopia. Now attention will shift to finance minister Arun Jaitley. The Economic Survey will be released on Friday. A day later comes the first full budget of the Narendra Modi government.
The Indian economy is looking far healthier than it did in recent years. India is also better placed than the other major economies. This means Jaitley should worry less about the immediate quarters. He should focus his budget on what can help India over the next decade.
Jaitley made an eloquent point in the parliamentary debate on the land acquisition ordinance. He said the core issue is not the struggle between rich and poor or between farmers and industry. It is about either adding to or reducing poverty in India. That is what Budget 2015 will hopefully be about.
