One was convicted of heresy and defying the ‘sense and authority’ of the Holy Scripture, the other has been accused of playing God with our genes. But on 22 May, nearly 500 years after he was buried in an unmarked grave, astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was reburied as a hero by Polish priests, two days after J Craig Venter announced to the world that his institute had succeeded in creating the first self-replicating synthetic bacterial cell. Venter’s creation promises to do to our understanding of biology what Copernican theory did for our galaxy.
