The current edition of the Fifa World Cup marked, if recent reports in popular media were to be believed, the death of the European style of football and the dominance of the Latin American style of play. If nothing else, such reports have given the semi-final line-up that eventually emerged an air of improbability: Three of the teams are European. Turns out the market, if one goes by betting odds, didn’t think this line-up all that improbable at all. Spain, Germany and the Netherlands are all pre-tournament favourites, it emerges, with Spain fancied to win the cup (to be sure, Argentina and Brazil were favourites, too). And at no stage before or during the tournament has any African team figured in the list of favourites at bookmakers around the world. So much for another myth: of this being Africa’s cup. Moral: Go by markets, not myth.
