Asked about the biggest achievement during his three-day trip to Nepal, external affairs minister S.M. Krishnasaid it was his meeting with several leaders of different political hues in a short period. That disappointing outcome pretty much sums up India’s engagements with its Himalayan neighbour.

While Kathmandu claims to be conscious of the often-coinciding security interests of both countries, it still does not have a basic extradition treaty with New Delhi. That obviously hobbles security cooperation, given that Nepal has in the past acted as one of the take-off points for threats against India.

Certainly, Prachanda and his Maoist comrades don’t make it easy for pro-India action in Nepal. But purely at the level of government, such differences should have mattered little. If Krishna’s visit this week signifies anything, it is Nepal’s inability to iron over teething issues such as this.
