The controversial memo on Hillary Clinton that was put out by Barack Obama’s staff is perhaps an early indication that the “India Factor” will resonate in this US presidential election as well. The Obama camp questioned the Clintons’ proximity to Indian groups in the US and their links to outsourcing companies. The memo described Hillary Clinton as a senator from Punjab.
Four years ago as well, it was the Democratic Party that trained its guns on the outsourcing business when John Kerry described CEOs of US companies exporting jobs to India as traitors.
There have been reports that Indian outsourcing companies have been trying to counter scare-mongering with a combination of lobbying and creating jobs for Americans. Obama’s memo shows that they were right in moving early.
It’s strange. Indians have long been used to rants from local politicians about the foreign hand. Now, we are at the receiving end.
