In the run-up to the Commonwealth Games, the “poor” of Delhi—migrant workers, street hawkers and slum dwellers—were evicted and shunted back to their villages. Less wealthy residents who may have been interested in the Games were kept out by high ticket prices for sports such as badminton and boxing. Now, faced with embarrassingly empty stadiums, Suresh Kalmadi wants to offer schoolchildren and “the lower level of society” free tickets to help fill seats. The irony might have been amusing, if it wasn’t so demeaning.
