In the 1800s, Henry David Thoreau watched ice from his beloved Walden Pond being carted away, to be shipped to the ice-deprived. The thought amused him then; it should alarm us now. A firm named S2C Global has announced India as its World Water Hub, and will ship half a million gallons of Alaskan mountain water to the country every year. Even with their self-publicized green technologies, bottled-water firms lugging their liquids across the planet are perpetuating a wasteful practice. Better a filtration plant in the neighbourhood than a bottle of water that’s travelled 30 days to be consumed in 10 minutes.
