Lenin is said to have once claimed that the road to world revolution lies through Peking, Shanghai and Calcutta. Now, after three decades of power in West Bengal, the Indian comrades are saying that the road to socialism is a long, long one. Till then, they have to make their peace with capitalism and do their utmost to attract private investment into the state.
Senior CPM leader Jyoti Basu has said as much on Saturday. Basu has been partly responsible for the fact that no company wanted to invest in West Bengal till recently.
But Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee doesn’t seem to care whether the cat is black or white, as long as it catches the investment mice.
Basu’s comrades in New Delhi should follow his reasoning—that West Bengal cannot swim alone against the national capitalist tide.
The same can be said about India and the world. The Left’s opposition to reform and FDI is an obstacle to economic growth.
