The Union government seems to be getting one thing right at least. In spite of all kinds of pressure, it has maintained a constant strategy against ultra-Left militant groups in the country. And it is paying off.
On Wednesday, Union home minister P. Chidambaram once again offered to hold talks with the Maoists if they desist from violence. If these extremists are on the back foot, it is because of a combined use of force and conciliation. If only “talks” were to be offered, men with guns will seldom listen. Once guns are met with guns, the chances of sense prevailing are higher.
It is important that the Maoists be persuaded that violence does no good. If they negotiate, the government is bound to listen to them. Here it will be useful if they remember Hegel’s dictum that the state is the march of god on earth. That may help them better appreciate the value of democracy.
