The rejection of the no-confidence motion that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) sought to introduce in Parliament was expected—much like the diatribe TMC chief Mamata Banerjee unleashed, targeting those who had failed to support her party’s initiative.
Indeed, if there was any surprise at all, it was that the TMC sought to press ahead with its effort. After all, Didi, as Banerjee is popularly called, has impressive street cred as a politician with a mass base, and she quit the Congress, formed her own party, and broke the Left Front’s hegemony in West Bengal.
Still, the increasing irrationality she and her party are displaying, while it provides grist for 24x7 news channels, is slowly but surely eroding her social capital, earned over the years.
If unchecked, it won’t be long before the faith of the electorate turns to disbelief.
