The theory that the government’s dirty tricks department is behind the campaign to discredit members of the so-called Team Anna cannot be ruled out entirely. Yet, there’s a lesson to be learnt in the ongoing denouement, both by the members of that grouping, and by others wishing to follow their example: movements built around the moral rectitude of its members are vulnerable.
It may have been inadvertent, but in the course of their fight against corruption, Team Anna overtly and covertly highlighted their own moral superiority over the people who run this country. Now, allegations have surfaced that they are not as morally superior as they were made out to be. True or false, the allegations will only serve to take the focus away from the issue —corruption. And it’s something that would never have happened had Team Anna continued to focus on the issue, not itself.
