The great power of science lies in its ability to link cause and effect. When this is extended to the human domain, grotesque explanations are routine. The London riots have been blamed on poverty and race. This has been a fashionable argument for long.
But it does not explain why all poverty-stricken places don’t go up in flames. The link between poverty, crime and despondency is far more complex than a one-to-one mapping imagined for London. Instead of focusing on fancy sociology, London should start preparing for the 2012 Olympics.
