Rahul’s discovery
Rahul’s discovery
I remember my father had once said that only 15 paise out of a rupee reach people. Now the situation is even worse." That was Rahul Gandhi late last week in Uttar Pradesh.
The young scion has now given us a new benchmark. He said that not even five paise out of every rupee spent by the government reaches the intended beneficiaries. “I met people who had 50 National Rural Employment Gurantee Act job cards with the same serial number and not even one card had the entry of work. What does this situation suggest?" Gandhi was quoted as saying. We’ll answer that question for him—it suggests rampant corruption.
No doubt, there is a bit of a paradox in these statements. Rahul’s first act as Congress general secretary was to get the government to extend the rural jobs scheme to the entire country—the same scheme that he now suggests is riddled with corruption. Hopefully, all this will help him rediscover his father’s early reformist zeal.
