Two nuclear disasters sound better than one, and it’s usual to bracket the recent Fukushima with the now 25-year-old Chernobyl. Yet the two are very different, one caused by a combination of natural calamities, the other by an accident.

The Ukraine disaster was also more costly—in human, economic, perhaps even political terms—and Japan may be more fortunate than the dying Soviet Union of 1986. The risk is that in the backlash against nuclear power, buttressed by not one but two incidents, a power-hungry world may come to neglect an important energy source.
