End to a charade

On Monday, India called off foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan, scheduled for next week. The decision followed Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit’s invitation to Kashmiri separatists for consultations ahead of the talks. In a bold move, the Narendra Modi government expressed its displeasure over “Pakistan’s continued efforts to interfere in Indian internal affairs" and said “under present circumstances seems no useful purpose will be served" by the secretary level meeting.
Frequent border incursions, meetings with separatist leaders and statements about “supporting the struggle of the people of Jammu and Kashmir" are the staple of Pakistan’s position with respect to India. Any change to this view appears unlikely for now. It is a good sign that India’s outlook does not share any liberal fantasies of looking for friendship where there is none.
