For the worthies who have of late taken up residence at Tihar Jail, the change must be troublesome. At 11,700, the jail crams in around double of the number of inmates it is meant to house. Yet jails aren’t meant to be pleasure zones, as Dominique Strauss-Kahn found out at the notorious Rikers Island prison last week. And with cities in India already overcrowded, larger jails just seem to take away valuable space from more deserving citizens. The grandees of Tihar should learn a lesson or two from their surroundings.
