Palm trees seem very expensive, but are beautiful. What are the inexpensive varieties I can use for my rooftop terrace?
The golden rule for palms is to buy them young. It will cost you less and the plant can adapt to the local environment better. Palms are generally easy to grow in pots. As far as Delhi’s weather is concerned, most varieties are best suited for living indoors. Palms grow best in damp environments, above 15 degrees Celsius. If you place them on your terrace, opt for Cycas revoluta, Caryota mitis, Chamaedorea elegans, Areca Palms or Phoenix Palms.
Are succulents good plants for Delhi? If so, where can I find some and how do I make a succulent garden?
The weather conditions in Delhi may not be conducive for succulents but, with some support to the growing environment, they can easily flourish here. Succulents require very little care and can grow into beautiful plants. Partial shade and protection facilitate growth. The soil should contain at least 60% coarse sand and 20% silt, and they should not be planted into the ground outdoors. You should grow them on a raised platform to protect them from the monsoons. A fibre- or polythene-covered shed can provide the shade. There are a few species such as Agave, Adenium and Beaucarnea that can be grown outdoors easily. Most local nurseries will have a few varieties with which to start your garden.
