If the shambolic preparations for last year’s Commonwealth Games were eclipsed by the Games’ eventual popularity, conditions at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens and Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium must be a crude reminder.

With the cricket World Cup set to begin on the subcontinent in about a month, crucial construction work remains undone at two of India’s premier stadia. As with the Games, last-minute hustling and cricket’s popularity may cover for the lag, but India’s repeated shoddiness in organizing sporting events may well be turning into an embarrassing trend.
