In a country that increasingly depends on private transport, increases in fuel prices are naturally the object of popular concern, and mass gatherings the favoured mode of protest. On Tuesday, when one such gathering organized by the BJP in the Capital turned unruly, the police resorted to water cannon to disperse the mob. Such incidents invariably catch the public imagination. But in the anger against “predatory” pricing policies, what remains less obvious is the political motive that seeks to leverage popular emotion for electoral gains.
