40 years after East Bengal overthrew the yoke of Pakistani rule, Bangladesh has honoured the late Indira Gandhi, the guiding spirit of that event in history. In a sense, it marks a closure for India—often a villain in many a Bangladeshi narrative. This theme is a product of its unrealistic expectations, unrealized dreams and domestic politics. It’s too much to hope that one big award can change that. Bangladesh needs help and assurances that India is a friend. These should be provided quickly and in ample measure.
