The Singur saga continues. The West Bengal assembly on Tuesday passed a Bill that allows the state government to return land to farmers at Singur, the sight of a battle of nerves between the previous government and many farmers there. The law is likely to prove controversial. It allows land to be returned only to “unwilling” farmers —who did not accept compensation. It discriminates against those who sold land for a better future. They will get nothing. This is one more instance of how protest pays in India while rational calculation is scorned.
