West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s oath-taking ceremony on Friday, attended by regional political heavyweights such as National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, Bihar chief minister and Janata Dal (United), or JD(U), chief Nitish Kumar, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, raised hopes of a possible non-Congress and non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance across the country, which would play a decisive role not just in regional politics but a crucial role in the floor management in Parliament.

To be sure, Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) along with the Samajwadi Party (SP), JD(U) and RJD account for 41 members of Parliament (MPs) in the Rajya Sabha and will be a strong regional force to reckon with for the Narendra Modi government at the centre.

The strengthening of regional parties’ ties comes at a time when the BJP-led government is planning a cabinet reshuffle soon. Party president Amit Shah confirmed the news in a press conference on Friday but didn’t comment on the dates. Meanwhile, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was also sworn in last week, is likely to meet President Pranab Mukherjee, vice-president Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Modi and finance minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday in New Delhi.
