Kolkata: The chairman of Kolkata Port Trust, R.P.S. Kahlon, was arrested late on Wednesday night by the Kolkata police for allegedly taking a bribe.
According to local newspapers, a trap was laid and he was caught red-handed for allegedly taking a bribe of ₹ 20 lakh at a central Kolkata hotel.
The police or the port trust hasn’t officially confirmed the arrest, but local newspapers cited unidentified police officials as saying that he is to be produced in court on Thursday.
D.D. Jagtap Dattaji, director of Bharat Kolkata Container Terminals Pvt. Ltd, was also arrested in this connection. They were arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police from a 5-star hotel, according to an agency report.
The duo has been booked for criminal conspiracy under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
A joint team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and city police, led by Joint Commissioner of Police at Special Task Force Vishal Garg, interrogated both Kahlon and Dattaji for several hours before arresting them.
Kahlon is a 1984 batch IAS officer from West Bengal cadre and has served in the state in various capacities. Before taking over the charge of Kolkata Port Trust chairman, he was principal secretary with the state environment department. He has also served as principal secretary of various other departments in the past, including transport, department of fisheries, department of sports and youth services, department of fire services and disaster management department (additional charge with fisheries department). He had also served as commissioner of health and family welfare, department of health and as labour commissioner of labour department.
