SC approves Rs5,000 cr for afforestation
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday approved a government plan to spend Rs5,000 crore over five years for afforestation under its Green India Programme.
The money should be utilized for providing employment, a bench headed by chief justice K.G. Balakrishnan said.
The money will be released from a fund set up by the court’s direction in 2002 from cash collected from companies and other users of forest land. The fund now has grown to Rs11,400 crore, including interest, according to court documents.
