No support to a Third Front govt: Congress
Ajay Maken says UPA-III coalition will rule the country after Lok Sabha elections
New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday dismissed the possibility of support to a Third Front in forming the next government at the Centre insisting the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-III coalition will rule the country after Lok Sabha elections.
“We have always been speaking of UPA-III coming to power. We are confident of UPA-III after the polls", party general secretary Ajay Maken told reporters.
His remarks assume significance as they came close on the heels of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav claiming that the Third Front will form a “stable government" with Congress’ support after Lok Sabha elections.
Maken was asked to react to Yadav’s statement.
Yadav told PTI in an interview in Lucknow that “the way in which election trend appears, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not be able to reach the magic figure and form government. Congress will emerge the weakest after elections. The parties associated with the Third Front will get maximum number of seats and will form the next government".
On likely support of Congress to the Third Front, Yadav said, “Samajwadi thinker Ram Manohar (Lohia) used to say whenever Congress remains in a weak position, it would support Samajwadis. And in the present election, the situation appears so. Due to which, Congress will help in forming secular government." PTI
