Independence Day: True freedom lies in economic freedom, says Jayalalithaa

Chennai: While giving the Independence day speech from the Fort St. George, Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa said that the true freedom lies in the economic freedom after hoisting the national flag on Monday.

“This day we salute those who fought for the country’s freedom. Freedom does not mean just the right to speak, write ... True freedom rests in economic freedom," said Jayalalithaa. She continued her speech by listing the welfare measures taken up by her government.

The chief minister said that knowing the importance of education, her government has taken all necessary steps for the benefit of students. Jayalalithaa said that the student enrolment in higher education institutions has increased to 44.8%, the highest among all the states in the country.

Jayalalithaa also added that her government has been taking steps for the welfare of farmers and Tamil Nadu had registered a record food grain production of around 130,000 tonnes.

Jayalalithaa recalled the contribution of freedom fighters from Tamil Nadu and said that her government has been striving for overall growth following the ideals of poet and freedom fighter Subramaniya Bharathi.

She announced that the pension for freedom fighters would be hiked from 11,000 to 12,000 and the pension for legal heir of freedom fighters is to be increased from 5,500 to 6,000.

P.Shanmugam, principal scientist of the Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, received the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award and P. Jayanthi of Namakkal district received the Kalpana Chawla award.
