Four miners feared dead in Coal India’s Jharkhand mine accident
Accident took place after a ceiling at Basantimata mine of Coal India collapsed
New Delhi: Four workers are feared dead after the ceiling of an underground mine of Coal India Ltd. collapsed on Monday in the eastern state of Jharkhand.
“One of the bodies has been recovered," said Prashant Kumar, deputy commissioner of Dhanbad district, where the Basantimata mine is located. “Efforts to recover the remaining bodies are on and work has been halted at the mine, which produces 300 metric tonnes daily," said T.K. Lahiry, chairman of unit Bharat Coking Coal Ltd.
Coal India reported 56 mining deaths in 2012, compared with 51 the previous year, according to its annual report. Production from underground mines was about 8% of the total in the quarter ended 30 June, according to the company’s website.
“The company will employ one member of the family of the deceased and give monetary compensation," Lahiry said. Bloomberg
