BANGALORE: Software professionals employed with companies based in Gurgaon and Bangalore earned more last year than their counterparts across the country, reflecting the concentration and continued lure of India’s largest hubs for about one million software professionals. That’s the finding of a survey conducted by Bangalore-based career portal, Cybermedia Dice Careers Ltd, and custom research firm, TNS.
The average salary for software workers with less than five years of experience in Gurgaon and Bangalore was above Rs6 lakh per year. The average salary for professionals employed with companies based in Chennai and Hyderabad was around Rs4.5 lakh in 2006.
The industry’s challenge is to meet the ambitions and aspirations of these professionals “who are restless and are always seeking a fast-track career growth,” said Pradeep Gupta, chairman and managing director of Cybermedia.
In 2005, the average salary paid to professionals with less than five years’ experience across the southern information technology hubs of Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad was Rs3.57 lakh. In the northern hub of Delhi and its growing suburb of Gurgaon, software professionals earned Rs2.79 lakh that year.
But in 2006, software professionals in the south earned Rs4.79 lakh a year, almost Rs1 lakh above the previous year’s level. Their counterparts in Delhi and Gurgaon were paid Rs4.58 lakh on an average, a jump of more than 60%.
The survey also found that software professionals employed with companies having more than 5,000 employees earn double the salary drawn by those working in companies with less than 50 employees. “For large software companies, salaries at par with the industry levels has become a ‘hygiene’ issue,” said Abraham Karimpanal, vice-president of TNS India, using a human resources term for basic necessities of the workplace.
The survey also found that salary alone does not retain employees; nearly a fourth of those surveyed in the study were seeking jobs despite being happy with pay.
In fact, over 70% of those seeking jobs were promoted by their employers in the last one year. In 2006, salaries nationwide for technology professionals rose by almost 15%, with companies such as Infosys Technologies Ltd and Wipro Ltd recognizing rising salary levels and attrition as one of their challenges.
