Bangalore: Civilian deaths in Afghanistan rose almost 40% last year to 2,118, the highest toll since the ouster of the Taliban regime in 2001, the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan said in an annual report.
Insurgents were responsible for 55 % or 1,160 deaths last year while pro-government forces, namely Afghan soldiers, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and US-led forces, killed 39% or 828 civilians, the report found, according to an emailed statement from the UN Information Centre in New Delhi.
