No plans to impose cess on polluting industries

New Delhi: The government has no plans to impose “green" cess on the polluting industries, the Rajya Sabha was informed on 6 December.

“The government is not considering to impose environmental cess on the polluting industries," Environment Minister Namo Narain Meena said in a written reply.

He said the existing Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 provide adequate powers to the competent authorities to control pollution and, if necessary, take punitive action.

Meena also said the government has enacted the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1979 which provides for collection of cess for water extracted.
