IIIT Bill introduced in Lok Sabha
Once approved, the law will give IIITs the status of institutes of national importance on a par with IIT and IIM
New Delhi: The government on Monday introduced the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bill, 2013, in the Lok Sabha, which wants to establish 20 such institutions in partnership with the private sector.
Once approved by Parliament, the law will give IIITs, including the four existing ones, the status of institutes of national importance on a par with Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management.
The cabinet had cleared the Bill on 17 August. The IIITs will be established with an initial investment of ₹ 128 crore. While half of the investment will be made by the central government, 35% of the cost will come from the states and remaining 15% from industry partners.
The government had set up four IIITs in Gwalior, Allahabad, Jabalpur and Kancheepuram in the 11th Five-year Plan that ended on March 2012. These institutes are now considered deemed universities, given through an executive directive, whereas national importance or central university statuses are legislative decisions.
