New Delhi: Visitors from Hong Kong, the Middle East and South Africa were the top three spenders on hotel rooms in India in 2013, according to a report by online hotel booking service Hotels.com, a part of Expedia Inc.

Travellers from Hong Kong spent the highest on hotel accommodation in the country last year, Rs8,061 a night on an average, a 6% increase when compared to what they paid in 2012, the report said.

Visitors from the Middle East and South Africa followed the trend paying Rs7,909 and Rs7,594 for a night on an average respectively. Middle East travellers paid 3% more on accomodation, while and South Africans spent 4% more on the same last year.

India also saw accomodation spends increasing from European tourists, which according to many industry experts could be sign of reviving economy.

“Many of the highest increases were paid by visitors from Europe," the report said. “Belgium was up 25% to Rs6,363 (for a night on an average), Finland added 22% to Rs6,187 and Italy had the same percentage increase, taking its average to Rs6,098. Thailand and China were the fastest risers in Asia with the former up 23% to Rs6,903 at and the latter up 17% to Rs7,115."

Of the few countries with declining rates paid, the Brazilians saw the hardest fall, paying 10% less during 2013 to Rs6,645, followed by Japan with its own devalued currency deterring foreign travel, down 6% to Rs7,154, the report added.

Malaysians spent the least, Rs5,315 per night on an average, registering a drop of 1%, followed by the Russians down 2% to Rs5,510 and the Taiwanese down 5% to Rs5,517.

Meanwhile, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bengaluru, Chennai and Jaipur continued to be the top six spots frequented by foreign tourists, the report said. However, Agra, where the Taj Mahal is located, dropped two spots to ninth position in 2013, giving way to Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram.
