New Delhi: In its bid to reduce carbon emission by the aviation industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will join hands with bodies like Delhi-based Teri to frame plans and ask governments to take steps to tackle pollution.

To provide an impetus to emission control activities in aviation, IATA DG Giovanni Bisignani would arrive here in few days and address a seminar on the issue along with Nobel Laureate and The Energy and Resources Institute head R.K. Pachauri, IATA officials here said.

The IATA and other global aviation bodies have jointly evolved a strategy to improve fuel efficiency by an average of 2% annually till 2020, working towards a carbon- neutral growth and to bring about a 50% net reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, compared to 2005.

At a recent conference of the UN-body International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on aviation and climate change, a declaration was adopted by the contracting states to work together to achieve this goal.

ICAO and the states also decided to establish a process to develop a framework for economic measures in this direction and encourage the development and use of sustainable biofuels.

At this conference, Bisignani had urged governments to move forward quickly to implement what was agreed upon and develop an ambitious agenda, saying the airline industry had set tougher targets for itself than its regulators were prepared to require.
