New Delhi: The Socio - Economic and Caste Census 2011 was launched on Wednesday from Sankhola village in West Tripura district. It is the first ever socio-economic and caste census post-independence.
This below pverty line (BPL) census will be conducted by ”state governments/union territory administrations with the technical and financial support of the Ministry of Rural Development,” a release said.
The release also said that low cost handheld device will be used for the collection of data which will reduce the time for collecting and processing data. The management of information system (MIS) for the census will be developed by the national informatics centre (NIC).
Household without shelter, destitutes, manual scavengers, primitive tribal groups and legally released bonded labourers will have the ’highest priority’ for inclusion in the BPL list. The census is aimed at identifying BPL households that can benefit from Centre’s welfare schemes.
