Maneka Gandhi’s assets worth `40 crore
The BJP MP is contesting LS elections from UP's Pilibhit constituency
Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh): Animal rights activist and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of Parliament (MP) Maneka Gandhi has declared assets, including a rifle, worth about 40 crore. A sitting MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Aonla, Gandhi is contesting the general elections from the Pilibhit constituency. Her son Varun Gandhi represents Pilibhit in the Lok Sabha.
She has declared assets worth 37.41 crore—movable assets of 12.46 crore and immovable assets of 24.95 crore—in her self-sworn affidavit filed before the Election Commission (EC). Maneka, chairperson of the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centrein Pilibhit, does not have a car or any other vehicle. According to her affidavit, she is facing a court case under Sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the affidavit said.
A court in Pilibhit has taken cognizance of the case against Maneka Gandhi on 3 January 2011. However, the Allahabad high court stayed trial proceedings against her on 4 May last year, it said. Fifty-seven-year-old Maneka Gandhi’s movable assets include 6 crore in bank accounts, gold and silver jewellery of about 1.47 crore and a licensed rifle worth about 40,000, the affidavit said. She possesses a commercial property worth 6.95 crore and a residential property valued at 18 crore, it said. She has declared 39,365 cash in hand. Polling in Pilibhit is scheduled to be held on Thursday. Varun Gandhi is contesting election from Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur constituency which will go to polls on 7 May.
