New Delhi: Demography and age composition of voters and legislators played a key role in the recent assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Mint takes a look at the key demographic outcomes of these elections.

It is often perceived that a young population may choose a younger representative and a state like Kerala with an older population may elect older representatives. However, there is no such correlation, shows data.

According to Sanjay Kumar, a political analyst and director of the New Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), political parties hardly provide tickets to young candidates, unless they come with a strong political background.

In Assam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a new entrant. Since it wanted to expand as a party in that state, it has a major proportion of legislators in the younger lot of 41-50 years. The choice was similar for the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha election as well.

Data points

1. Assam has the maximum share (38.88%) of legislators in the 41-50 age group. For the other three states, the highest proportion of MLAs falls in the 51-60 years category. Assam has the highest proportion (18.14%) of its population in the age group of 21-30 years.

2. Kerala has the highest proportion (2.05%) of population in the age group of 81-90 years and has elected the highest proportion of legislators in this age group when compared to the rest of the three states.

3. Tamil Nadu has the highest proportion of population in the 21-30 year age group at 17.93%, but still, the largest group of its MLAs (39%) is in the 51-60 year age group.

4. Each state has elected one MLA below the age of 30.

5. Except Assam, every state has elected one MLA above 80.
