New Delhi: Prime minister Narendra Modi late on Wednesday telephoned US president elect Donald Trump and congratulated him on his election.
Modi, who has met incumbent US president Barack Obama four times at the bilateral level in two years, earlier, had tweeted his congratulations on the Trump victory.
“Continuing to build on the bedrock of strong Indo-US relations. PM spoke just now to @realDonaldTrump to congratulate him on his election," Indian foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said in a tweet.
“PM conveyed his best wishes & the two leaders looked forward to working closely to take the #IndiaUS strategic partnership to a new height," he said in another post.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump, 70, a real estate developer turned reality TV star turned politician, stunned Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton handing her a surprise defeat.
Trailing in public opinion polls for months, Trump pulled off the win, collecting enough of the 270 state-by-state electoral votes needed.
His four-year term begins on 20 January.
