Every morning, hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren across India put their lives on the line even though all they’re doing is trying to get to school. While buses of the kind featured on this page are available to those that can afford them, most schools—even in the large cities—end up using buses that are the worse for wear. Worse still, a majority of children travel in even more unsafe means of transport to school. Fishcarts and motorized cycle-rickshaws—both do not need registration—are the preferred means of transport in Chennai; and Maruti vans converted as cargo carriers or overloaded auto rickshaws are popular in Delhi. And in all cases, the vehicle used accommodates more children than it should. Mint’s photographers capture the daily travels (and in some cases, the daily travails) of schoolchildren across the country.
