Ahmedabad: The special trial court for the 2002 Gulbarg Society riot case, in which 68 people including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri were killed, started hearing on Thursday on a day-to-day basis.

Advocates of both the sides appeared before the special trial court judge P.B. Desai on Thursday. On behalf of the Supreme Court-appointed special investigating team (SIT), special public prosecutor R.C. Kodekar submitted details of the initial part of the investigation in the case. The SIT lawyer said before the court that the case was investigated earlier by seven to eight police officers after which it was transferred to the SIT.

On Friday, the SIT is set to place details of the accused and the chargesheets made against them, Kodekar said. There were eight chargesheets made in the case, which were later consolidated after a Supreme Court order, he said.
As the counsel for victims, advocate S.M. Vora appealed to the court to hear their application filed a year ago, to make four police officers accused in the Gulbarg Society case. These police officers include the then police commissioner of Ahmedabad city P.C. Pandey, former joint commissioner of police M.K. Tandon, former assistant commissioner of police P.B. Gondia and also the then assistant commissioner of police in the city crime branch, S.S. Chudasama.

On 13 November, the Supreme Court had directed the SIT, which probed the nine riot cases including the Gulbarg Society case, to proceed expeditiously and complete hearing of the case in three months. However, the bench said that judgement should not be pronounced by the trial court without its permission. A day after the Sabarmati S-6 coach burning incident near Godhra railway station, 68 people were allegedly killed by a mob at Gulbarg Society in the city on 28 February 2002 during the riots.
