Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced that elected representatives in gram panchayats will earn at least Rs1,500 a month, compared with Rs150 previously, raising the pay at every level of the three-tier village council.
Panchayat heads will from now earn Rs3,000 a month compared with Rs2,000 previously, she said. Banerjee said her government had merged 10 departments to reduce costs without laying off people. No one will become redundant, she said, even as the state looks at ways to rationalize costs.
