Narendra Modi appeals for peace in Gujarat amid protests by Patels
A solution can be found through talks, Modi said, adding that violence will never achieve anything
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed to the people of Gujarat to maintain peace against the backdrop of the influential Patel community stepping up a campaign to be granted the status of other backward class (OBC), and the benefits that go with it.
Addressing the nation, Modi said, “Everyone must work together for development and it is through development that we can serve the people, especially the poor. Once again, I appeal to the people of Gujarat to maintain peace. Violence will never achieve anything."
He added, “We can find a solution through talks."
On Tuesday, 21-year-old Hardik Patel addressed a crowd of over half a million people at the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation grounds in Ahmedabad to press the demand for reservation.
Chief minister Anandiben Patel also issued an appeal to people to maintain peace. A day after violence erupted in Gujarat during the stir for quota by the Patel community, curfew has been clamped in parts of Ahmedabad, Surat and Mehsana districts and security stepped up in the wake of the state-wide bandh on Wednesday called by agitation leader Hardik Patel.
