Chennai: When Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa was appealing to people in her R.K. Nagar constituency on Friday to re-elect her, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asking the people of Tamil Nadu to elect the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government “to free the state from corruption".

Elaborating that the centre’s initiatives are benefiting different sections of the society, Modi said, “Tamil Nadu has been gripped in corruption. Our aim is to free the state from corruption. We want a prosperous Tamil Nadu where the youth gets opportunities."

He said his government acted quickly during the floods in Chennai in December last year.

“We sent personnel from the three forces and I also visited the affected areas. When people were struggling the centre rushed help," Modi said.

The prime minister, who earlier in the day campaigned in Hosur, said, “Prominent state leaders were involved in the 2G scam while we are working towards Digital India. Money from the recent coal auctions has been utilized to serve the poorest of the poor, unlike the past when money was looted."

Hitting out at the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre, Modi alleged that the Congress party was corrupt.

“Even Italian courts have stated that the previous UPA government was found involved in the chopper scam and corruption. They must be punished for looting people’s money," Modi said.

He said “no corruption" has happened in mining and supply of coal under the BJP’s rule. “We are taking the nation on the correct path."

The prime minister said he would bring all the central government’s schemes to Tamil Nadu if the BJP was voted to power in the state. Modi said he was the “first Indian prime minister" to visit Jaffna to “wipe" the tears of the Tamils there.
