Troubles between India and Iran over oil payments may be heading towards a resolution. Iran has said it’s been talking to India about the issue and that there are no problems. Its central bank said India has already paid two-third of oil-related debt. It added that the remaining payments were also being taken care of. India is the second biggest buyer of Iranian oil. But last December, the Reserve Bank closed down a clearing-house used to process India’s oil payments to Iran.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed the nation on Monday in a speech marking India’s 64th year of independence. Addressing a large crowd even as rains fell, Manmohan Singh reiterated that his government was determined to fight corruption. But he also criticized the use of hunger strikes by activists calling for a stronger Lokpal bill.
