Melbourne: An Indian couple was duped of $132,000 after the company they invested in went belly-up in October 2004.
Jim and Sarbjit Singh, residents of Billinudgel, a town in New South Wales are now facing a bitter court battle after losing their entire life’s savings, the Northern Star newspaper reported today.
In 2003, Sarbjit, then working in Byron Bay was approached by a workmate about an investment opportunity in a proposed USD 8 million retirement village at Coomera on the Gold Coast. The couple invested their savings in the development project but the company, registered with the Australian and Securities Investment Commission in 2003, failed later.
Jim became suspicious in late 2003 and contacted the Gold Coast City Council to inquire about the development application for the retirement village, only to be told it had lapsed some time ago. While the couple approached the court for justice, Wayne Yeo, one the directors of the failed company, applied to have an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) taken out against Singh. An AVO is a court order taken out by a person who fears violence or harassment against him.I tried ringing Yeo, “but every time I ring Mr Yeo, he hangs up," Jim said. His solicitor sent Yeo a letter of demand, but it was ignored.
