Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a public rally in Lucknow on Monday—his first in the capital of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh since the end of the demonetization exercise on 30 December.

The rally is part of a series of public engagements for the prime minister, who gave a televised address to the nation on New Year’s Eve in which he announced several measures for the rural and urban poor, small businesses, farmers and senior citizens—sections worst hit by the outlawing of high-value notes.

In his address at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s parliamentary party meeting on 16 December, the last day of the winter session of Parliament, public rallies in Kanpur and Dehradun and the address to the nation, Modi has attempted to refocus public attention on the government’s fight against black money, linking it with demonetization.

The Lucknow rally has been billed as one of the biggest to be addressed by Modi recently.

“It is seen as a culmination of the four ‘parivartan yatras’ (transformation journeys) carried out in the state. In a way, all the campaigning of our party that has happened till now in the four regions of the state will see a coming together in the prime minister’s mega rally on Monday," a senior party leader said, requesting anonymity.

The choice of the venue is also significant given Lucknow, in central Uttar Pradesh, has been a stronghold of the ruling Samajwadi Party, which is embroiled in an internal power struggle.
