New Delhi: An Italian marine accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012 has asked the Supreme Court to extend his stay in Italy after recent heart surgery.
Lawyers for Massimiliano Latorre filed an application on Wednesday in the Supreme Court seeking permission for him to remain in Italy, where he had the surgery on Monday.
The court said his application would be taken up for hearing on 12 January.
Latorre is one of two Italian marines who were providing security aboard a cargo ship in February 2012 when they opened fire on a fishing boat they mistook for a pirate craft and killed two Indian fishermen.
Latorre has been in Italy since September undergoing medical treatment after suffering a stroke. He’s due back in India on 15 January.
