Only one Indian University—the Indian Institute of Science—has secured an overall ranking in the list of top 500 universities released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Friday.

The Bangalore-based IISc occupied an overall ranking between 301 and 400 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities. The universities were ranked on the basis of quality of education, quality of faculty, research output and per capita performance.

Exact ranks have been mentioned only for the top 50 universities.

In the subject-wise ranking, IISc was ranked between 51 and 75 in Chemistry, and between 101 and 150 in computer science. The Indian Statistical Institute was also ranked between 101 and 150 in computer science.

Harvard, Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), U.C. Berkeley and Cambridge took the top five spots in the rankings. American universities occupied the most number of spots at 148, followed by 39 German universities.

The rankings have been released by the Center for World-Class Universities since 2003. While IISc occupied the same overall rank last year, its performance has come down in Chemistry, where it was among the top 50 universities in 2013. In Computer Science, it was ranked between 51 and 75 in 2013.

No other Indian university had secured an overall ranking in 2013 either.
