Naharkatiya (Assam): Independent India’s first oil field at Naharkatiya in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district was on Monday declared an ‘Oil Heritage Well’ by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on the occasion of oil exploration major Oil India Ltd’s (OIL) golden jubilee.
“I am proud of OIL and it is doing well in all fields. Their commitment to development of the nation and society is unquestionable", asserted Gogoi declaring the Naharkatiya oil well as an ‘Oil Heritage Well’ here.
“Though we have prospered, we must look towards global warming, ecological imbalance and development of local areas. Unlike other chief ministers I am against local farmers being uprooted from the land for the sake of expansion of industry", Gogoi asserted.
If local farmers’ relocation was absolutely necessary, Gogoi said he was for their proper rehabilitation.
“I am also insisting with the ministry of petroleum (MoP) to give top priority for setting up a petroleum institute and museum in Assam, and the ministry is very positive in its response. We are also giving more interest on bio-fuel", he added.
Asserting commemoration of the Naharkatiya well was a commemoration of oil exploration in Assam, MoP additional secretary S Sundereswar said, the OIL would be issuing initial public offerings (IPO) soon.
OIL chairman-cum-managing director M R Pasrija said, “we are committed to live up to the expectations of our stake holders. Every year we go into new and deeper horizons".
