Srinagar: A 61-year-old man died in a road accident during clashes in the city and 14 others were injured in action by security forces across Kashmir valley on Tuesday, even as protests erupted again in some areas after authorities lifted curfew from the entire valley except Anantnag town.

Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Rajouri Kadal in the city, lost control of his scooter when he was caught in clashes between protesters and security forces in Eidgah, a police official said.

He said the retired government employee suffered head injuries after falling from the two-wheeler. He was rushed to SKIMS Hospital Soura where he succumbed to injuries.

Elsewhere in the city, people staged rallies in Jehnagir Chowk, Batamaloo, Gojwara and Eidgah against the recent civilian killings in action by security forces.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel fired tear gas shells and crowd control weapons to break the rallies, resulting in injuries to eight people, the official said.

He said stone-pelting took place in Chanapora and Natipora in civil lines areas of the city but no injuries were reported. In Anantnag district’s Malaknag area, protesters took to the streets, leading to clashes with law enforcement agencies, the official said. He said six people were injured in the clashes.

The authorities on Tuesday lifted curfew from all parts of Kashmir, except Anantnag town, after 17 days of unrest in the valley in which 47 people were killed and 5,500 others injured in violent clashes following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces.

Although the lifting of curfew coincided with the separatist camp suspending the strike after 2pm on Tuesday till Wednesday morning, most parts of the valley continue to observe a shutdown.

The commercial hub of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas remained closed even after 2pm while only groceries and shops selling essentials were opened in other parts of the valley, the official said.

Mobile telephony, mobile Internet services and train services remained suspended for 18th day while schools, colleges and other educational institutions were closed due to a strike called by the separatist groups.
