Swine flu | How do diseases transfer from animals to humans?

The news of the spread of swine flu over the last few days brought back memories of 2006 and 2007, when another type of flu—bird flu—threatened to expand into a pandemic. Why do we suddenly seem to be catching so many diseases from animals? Why is a swine flu or a bird flu more dangerous to us than regular human flu?
